Annual Ann Arbor Marathon Moved from June to March

The third annual Ann Arbor Marathon will soon be underway. This year however, the marathon has moved from June to March, which means that participants should begin making plans to compete right now.

The inaugural race took place in 2012, when it was held on Father’s Day. As a result, a number of area residents and business owners had to contend with certain streets being blocked off so that the event could take place. As a result, Mayor John Hieftje noted that changes to the race’s schedule needed to take place so as not to inconvenience locals.

In 2013, the race was held on a different day in June, and also included a new route in order to minimize its impact on traffic flow. Although these changes were good, race organizers felt that a switch from June to March would better benefit both the city and participants. An email blast sent to race participants from previous years showed that most people agreed that a date in late March would work best for everyone concerned.

In addition to changing the date, a number of other changes will take place in 2014 as well. The route will once again change, with the finish being on South Main Street in downtown Ann Arbor between East Liberty and East William streets. The course also begins on Main Street at the northwest corner of the “Big House,” and will run partly through the University of Michigan campus as well as along the Huron River.

There will be one 13.1-mile route for half-marathon participants, and marathon runners will be required to complete two full loops of the same course. Organizers have planned a 5k and 1.2 mile race in addition to the marathon and half-marathon.

Registration for the event is already underway, and individuals can take advantage of discounted fees for the time being. Runners may obtain registration forms by visiting the marathon’s website. An early bird discount is available from now until February 28th, 2014. A portion of these registration fees is earmarked for distribution to the Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation.

The Ann Arbor Marathon is also a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. Since the annual Ann Arbor Marathon has moved from June to March, runners who would like to participate should sign up now in order to participate in this exciting event that’s coming up on March 30th, 2014.

Ann Arbor Farmer's Market

Ann Arbor's historic Kerrytown District plays host to the 90-plus-year-old Ann Arbor Farmer's Market. This market is a year-round market featuring locally grown food, plants, hand-made crafts and freshly prepared food.

More than 160 vendors display and serve up an incredibly diverse assortment of producers and artisans. Ann Arbor’s local restaurants and stores have even started to shop the market themselves, forging mutually beneficial relationships and bringing fresh, local food to happy residents and visitors of this eclectic Michigan community.

Educational events, such as canning exhibitions and cooking demonstrations by local experts and an autumn harvest celebration for kids, provide food for thought and entertainment at the market.

The City of Ann Arbor's Parks and Recreation Department manages the market. A Public Market Advisory Commission, made up of market vendors, regular market customers and local community members, holds public meetings each month to discuss and debate market operations.

Holiday Celebrations Near Ann Arbor

Midnight Madness

Come join in the party on Main Street in downtown Ann Arbor! On Friday, Dec. 6th, a number of the stores along Main Street will stay open late for you to take advantage of myriad holiday sales. Also, enjoy special entertainment and hopefully run into both Santa Claus and Miss Washtenaw County, who will both roam the sidewalks between 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. For more information, visit the Main Street Area Association's website.

 

Chelsea Annual Light Parade

Enjoy the city of Chelsea's 9th annual Light Parade! In addition to the dozens of lighted floats and vehicles, this sparkling event features a number of marching bands and Jolly Old Saint Nicholas himself! The parade begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7th at Chelsea State Bank’s south parking lot and winds up at the Chelsea Teddy Bear Company, where you can revel in the free community afterglow party with refreshments.

Holiday Hustle 5K Run

Burn some of those holiday calories off by participating in the Holiday Hustle Run charity event at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7th, in downtown Dexter. Participants receive one raffle ticket for each canned or other non-perishable food items donated. The first 500 participants to register receive a choice of some jingling or flashing flare to wear during the run.

Saline Christmas Parade

The 38th Annual Saline Christmas Parade takes place on Saturday, Dec. 7th, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in downtown Saline. The parade features Santa Claus with his chief elf riding on his sleigh, Mrs. Claus, baton twirlers, a hot-air balloon, myriad floats, bands, horses, goats and donkeys.

Visit Santa at Briarwood Mall

Santa is leaving the toy-making and Christmas-list reading to the elves in order to visit with the wee little ones who come to do their 2013 holiday shopping at Briarwood Mall. Jolly Old Saint Nick made his first appearance at the mall on Friday, Nov. 8th, and will be inviting kiddies to sit on his lap through Tuesday, Dec. 24th, during the following time periods:

  • 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM, Monday - Saturday
  • Noon – 6:00 PM, Sunday

Briarwood Mall

Briarwood Mall is located at 100 Briarwood Circle in Ann Arbor and features a number of popular retailers, some of which include Athleta, Soma, Vera Bradley, Brighton Collectibles, Michael Kors, L’Occitane, LUSH, White house Black Market and Yankee Candle.

While you have the children at the mall, be sure to stop into Elephant Ears, a locally owned shop that specializes in children's clothing and toys located near Von Maur, so you can surreptitiously find out what they would love to discover under the tree this Christmas. In addition to making this holiday season truly memorable, take the kids skating at Briarwood Winter Wonderland.

In October, Briarwood put the finishing touches on an extensive renovation project, which included remodeling of the entrances, new seating and charging stations, new way-finding signage, and a new play area, family restroom and guest services section in the Von Maur wing.

Michigan Pond Hockey Classic

The 2012 Michigan Pond Hockey Classic will take place January 13th through the 15th, on Whitmore Lake. This annual event is one of the fastest growing hockey tournaments of its kind in Michigan. The three days of the tournament will consist of back-to-back 4-on-4 matches, taking place on the frozen lake, just as hockey was played in the good old days.

While the event is certainly about the love of hockey in its most traditional form, The Michigan Pond Hockey Classic is also a fundraising event for the Michigan Pond Hockey Sports Charities (MPHSC), a 501 (c)(3) non-profit. All proceeds from the Michigan Pond Hockey Classic will go directly into the MPHSC fund, which will then be distributed to local schools and hockey associations. These funds will be used to provide financial assistance to families in need, so their children can participate in youth athletic programs. Unfortunately, budget cuts have forced many schools to cut nearly all funding from athletic programs, meaning students who want to play sports must pay a participation fee. Families experiencing financial stress are hit hardest by the “pay to play” model, and it is the mission of MPHSC to make participation in athletic programs a reality for every child who desires it.

MPHSC Vice President, Ed Gentile, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Our hope is that the support from the Michigan Pond Hockey Sports Charities will encourage and promote the health and wellbeing of children through youth athletics. We want children to be encouraged to play sports and stay active and not be discouraged by a price.”

So, whether you are a hockey fan, a hockey player, a parent, or a community member recognizing your vested interest in the health and wellbeing of our youth, come show your support at the Michigan Pond Hockey Classic!

Attention players! There are a limited number of available spots, so if you want to get in on this one-of-a-kind event for a good cause, make sure to register as soon as possible. Registration closes on December 11th.
