Until the 1800s, the area was popular with multiple Native American tribes seeking excellent hunting grounds and abundant salt. In the early 1820s, the area was scouted but passed up by the University of Michigan, not by Orange Risdon. In 1825, Risdon, a researcher, proved instrumental in the creation of the village, which became incorporated in 1832. The name of the town was conceived due to the rich salt mineral deposits that flow through the rivers and landscape. The town may never have grown to its current size if it were not for the Civil War. The sheer number of men recruited away from the village caused a severe shortage in manual labor workers and increased the need for agricultural development which eventually led to a population boom.
