Northfield Township real estate is located in a 37 square mile area in Washtenaw County, Michigan, and includes some of the area covered by Whitmore Lake. The township was first established in 1832 during a Territorial Legislature meeting held in Detroit, Michigan. There are many different stories related to the naming of the town, though the most popular points to the history of the settlers in the area. Records indicate that Northfield Township in Michigan may be named in commemoration of Northfield Township in Massachusetts, where many of the area’s settlers came from. Another source of the town name comes from its location in the northern fields of Michigan. Yet another story claims that the township received its name because of its geographical location in the northern part of Washtenaw County.
